09:26 pm: A bit of this, a bit of that
Since the last post, many things have happened. In summary:

  • Russia
I went to Eurocrypt 2006: The 25th International Cryptology Conference! It was held in a hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was pretty damn cool - and the department paid for it! Well... They will do. I should have a cheque for over £1000 coming through any day now... ;-)

The highlight was giving an impromptu talk in the "Rump Session" - which was a session after a meal where people give 5 minute talks. I'm told that in years gone by, there were a lot of non-serious talks given. But this year, well...

It all started when someone decided to give away a free gift in the conference pack. It was a spinny thing, which seemed to be along the lines of a magic 8-ball. Everyone found it a kinda funny, and since it was a cryptography conference, made jokes about it being a random number generator.

I got into an argument with my supervisor (who happens to be the editor of the ISO/IEC 18031 standard on random number generation) about exactly how random it was. Determined to prove a point, I measured it. Yep, I sat there and I spun it 99 times. Kenny, a professor from my university who happened to be running the rump session suggested I write it up as a rump session talk... so with a little help from a couple of friends, I did! The Eurocrypt Spinning Predictificator and Random Number Generator was born!

Now, having been told by Kenny that there seemed to be a lack of humour in this year's talks, I spent many, many hours carefully preparing my slides for the talk (if you want to view the slides, make sure you go to fullscreen mode in acrobat reader, otherwise the animation won't work). It went down rather well I feel - unlike the other talks that evening, the audience actually paid attention, and many people I didn't know came up to me and said they liked it! :-D

  • Alton Towers
To celebrate my birthday, I invited several of my Bristol friends and a couple of friends from school to go to Alton Towers! It's been ages since I went there - used to be an annual tradition that we go there for my birthday so it was much like old times. A few new rides since I was last there: Rita, Queen of Speed is most awesome! It starts entirely on the flat, and goes from 0 to 61 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds... That's slightly more than 1g horizontally... so it feels like gravity turns through 45 degrees when it launches! It then goes up a hill under its own momentum, quite the reverse of most rollercoasters, i.e. starting by dropping down a hill... Makes me wanna go on Stealth at Thorpe Park... it uses the same starting mechanism but the acceleration is slightly higher... Of course, neither compare to Kingda Ka...
